From Farm to Doorstep: Eggs Update

Recently, many of our customers have noticed the limited availability on some eggs (free range and organic), and we wanted to take a moment to explain what’s happening and how we’re working to maintain reliable deliveries despite these challenges.

Please note we have plenty of St. Ewe Rich Yolk eggs available, add to your basket here , they are delicious.

Understanding the Current Situation

The UK is experiencing an egg shortage, primarily driven by an unprecedented outbreak of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. This outbreak has affected poultry farms across the country, leading to reduced production and strained supply chains.

The Impact of Bird Flu

Bird flu has created multiple challenges for UK egg producers:

  • Flock Reductions: Some farmers have been forced to cull infected birds to prevent further spread of the disease
  • Housing Requirements: Mandatory housing orders have kept free-range birds indoors for extended periods, affecting both production and classification. These are often in areas called Avian Influenza Prevention Zones
  • Biosecurity Measures: Enhanced safety protocols have increased production costs and slowed down operations

These factors, combined with rising feed and energy costs, have created the perfect storm for egg shortages across the UK. It’s been very difficult to even go and visit our suppliers.

How we’re trying to help

Despite these challenges, we remain committed to supporting both our regional farmers and our customers:

Supporting Local Producers: We’re working closely with our network of small-scale, egg producers who maintain high biosecurity standards and animal welfare practices.

Transparent Communication: We believe in honest communication about availability and will keep you updated about any changes to our egg supply.

Suppliers with availability: There are suppliers that are still supplying regular orders of eggs. St. Ewe can be found here.

Looking Forward

While we can’t predict exactly when egg supplies will return to normal, experts suggest that with proper management and biosecurity measures, the situation should improve in the coming months. The resilience of British farming has been tested before, and we’re confident that with patience and community support, we’ll overcome these challenges.

We really appreciate your understanding and continued support of both our service and the hardworking farmers who make it possible.
