In most instances your milk hut will arrive flat packed, in a recyclable pizza-style cardboard box. Here are some simple instructions to put it all together and further down some tips on how to get the best out of it.
Protecting Your Modern Milkman Milk Hut: Tips for Keeping Your Milk Hut Long-Lasting
A key part of our delivery experience is our “Milk Hut,” a humble, weather-resistant box that keeps products safe until they’re brought inside. However, just like any outdoor item, these huts can benefit from a little extra care and protection to ensure they last through every season. Here are some practical tips for maintaining the milk huts, keeping them secure, and extending their longevity.

1. Weatherproof Your Hut
Your milk hut is designed to endure typical weather conditions but giving it a bit of extra weatherproofing can significantly extend its lifespan. Here’s how:
- Apply a Sealant/Varnish or outdoor wood water proofing. Using an exterior-grade sealant on moisture resistant MDF or plywood can help prevent water absorption and protect it from rot and warping. Look for water-resistant, non-toxic varnishes specifically formulated for wood that will be close to food items. A single coat before winter and a refresh in the spring will make a big difference.
- Check for Cracks and Holes: Regularly inspect the hut for any cracks or holes, which can weaken the wood and allow water to seep in. Plywood patches or wood fillers work well for sealing up these small imperfections. If you do find any issues, please reach out to our customer service team and they would be happy to help.
2. Keep Your Milk hut On Hard Ground
If the hut is placed directly on the ground, it can get exposed to extra moisture from wet or damp surfaces, which can speed up wear and tear.
- Place on a Hard Surface: If your milk hut isn’t on your doorstep, please place it on a hard surface to avoid moisture seeping in from a soft surface.
3. Add Insulation for Extreme Weather
In particularly hot or cold weather, consider adding insulation to keep milk and groceries at their best:
- Insulating Foam Sheets: Line the interior walls with thin, weather-safe insulating foam sheets to help regulate the temperature, especially during the hottest or coldest months.
- Reusable Ice Packs: Adding a gel ice pack on hot days can help maintain a stable temperature. This is especially useful for keeping dairy products fresh in the summer. You can buy these here https://themodernmilkman.co.uk/products/doorstep-storage/ice-pack-2
5. Prevent Pest Intrusion
Pests can sometimes be curious about outdoor boxes, especially if there are groceries involved. Here’s how to keep them out of your milk hut:
- Keep your lid closed at night: We know this is an obvious one but please make sure your lid is closed after you’ve picked out your order. If you can place your empties to the side of the hut, it’s much easier for our drivers to collect, quietly and safely.
6. Routine Cleaning and Maintenance
Lastly, keeping the milk hut clean is an easy way to ensure its longevity and freshness for your deliveries.
- Wipe Down Regularly: Use a damp cloth to clean the inside and outside of the box to prevent buildup from dirt, dust, or spills. Every few weeks, a mild wood cleaner can be used to keep it looking polished and well-maintained.
- Refresh Wood Protection Annually: An annual refresh with a weatherproofing stain or varnish keeps the plywood durable, giving it a layer of protection against water, sun, and general wear.
Finally remember to change the delivery instructions online to let your driver know you are using one.
