Raw milk is one of those topics that crops up regularly in our inbox and search bars. We often get asked if we’d ever start delivering it, so here’s a bit more of deep dive into why we don’t.
It’s heavily regulated (for good reason)
Raw milk, that’s unpasteurised milk, straight from the cow is tightly controlled in the UK. In England, it can only legally be sold:
- Directly at the farm gate
- At farmers’ markets
- Through very specific local distribution channels
In Scotland, it’s banned entirely.
Farms that want to sell raw milk need to register specifically for that purpose and undergo additional inspections. Every bottle must carry the warning: “This milk has not been heat-treated and may therefore contain organisms harmful to health.”
Why we can’t (and wouldn’t) deliver it
As a doorstep delivery service, we don’t fit neatly into the “local distributor” category that regulations allow for. More importantly, none of the farms we work with are registered as raw milk producers.
Then there’s the practical side. Our entire model is built around reusable glass bottles that get returned, washed, and refilled. Applying (and removing) those legally required warning labels on bottles that go round and round? That’s a logistical nightmare that would compromise the very system we’ve built our service on.
What we do deliver instead
Our milk comes from British farms where welfare and quality are non-negotiable. It’s pasteurised, a process that heats milk just enough to kill harmful bacteria while keeping all the good stuff intact. You still get fresh, creamy, proper milk. You just don’t get the risks.
We work with dairies like Dales Dairy and Brades (those gorgeous golden Guernsey cows produce naturally creamy milk). All of them are committed to high welfare standards, sustainable farming, and delivering milk that tastes as good as it should.
The bottom line
We respect different opinions and those that are advocates of raw milk. We also think it’s brilliant that people are willing to seek out milk directly from their local farm gate. For us, we’re really good at delivering the freshest, creamiest British milk straight to your door in reusable glass bottles and that’s what we’ll stick too for the moment.
