On this blog, we’ll be sharing tested and perfected air fryer recipes, with a special focus on reimagining classic British comfort foods
Toad in the hole
Toad in the Hole is a beloved British comfort food that traditionally combines plump sausages nestled in a light, airy Yorkshire pudding batter, all baked together until golden and crispy. While conventionally prepared in the oven, here is an adapted air fryer version that delivers all the nostalgic flavors with a perfectly crisp exterior in less time!
We think Jolly Hog’s Proper Porkers are perfect for this recipe.
Ingredients
- 4 good-quality pork sausages (about 300g/10.5oz)
- 100g (3/4 cup) plain flour
- 2 large eggs
- 150ml (2/3 cup) milk
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil, plus extra for greasing
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tsp dried herbs (thyme, rosemary, or mixed herbs work well)
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional, but adds great flavour)
Equipment Needed
- Air fryer
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Small baking dish or cake tin that fits in your air fryer
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Batter
- In a large mixing bowl, sift the flour and add the salt and pepper.
- Create a well in the center and crack in the eggs.
- Begin whisking while gradually adding the milk to form a smooth batter.
- Whisk in the vegetable oil and Dijon mustard if using.
- Add the dried herbs and mix well.
- Let the batter rest for at least 15 minutes (or up to an hour if time permits). This allows the gluten to relax and results in a lighter Yorkshire pudding.
Step 2: Cook the Sausages
- Lightly grease your baking dish or cake tin with oil.
- Place the sausages in the dish and put it in the air fryer.
- Cook at 200°C (390°F) for 8-10 minutes until the sausages are lightly browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked at this stage).
Step 3: Add the Batter
- Working quickly, pour the batter over the hot sausages. The batter should sizzle slightly when it hits the hot dish.
- Return the dish to the air fryer immediately.
- Cook at 180°C (360°F) for 15-18 minutes until the batter is risen, golden brown, and crispy around the edges.

Cheese Toastie
There’s something magical about a cheese toastie made in an air fryer. The bread achieves that perfect golden crispness while the cheese melts into a gooey perfection that simply can’t be matched by a traditional toaster or frying pan.
Ingredients (Makes 1 Toastie)
- 2 slices of good quality bread (Hovis Farmhouse Batch )
- 30g (1oz) butter, softened
- 50-75g (2-3oz) cheese, grated or thinly sliced (Barbers Farmhouse Mature Cheddar)
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
- 1 tbsp caramelized onion chutney (optional)
- Freshly ground black pepper
Equipment Needed
- Air fryer
- Butter knife
- Grater (if using block cheese)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients
- Set your air fryer to preheat at 180°C (360°F) for 2 minutes.
- While it’s preheating, lay your bread slices on a flat surface.
- Butter the outside of each slice (the sides that will be in contact with the air fryer basket). Make sure to spread it right to the edges for maximum crispiness.
Step 2: Construct Your Toastie
- Flip the bread over so the unbuttered sides are facing up.
- If using, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on one slice.
- Pile the grated cheese, making sure it covers the entire surface.
- If using, add a dollop of caramelized onion chutney on top of the cheese.
- Add a crack of black pepper.
- Place the second slice on top, buttered side facing outward.
Step 3: Air Fry to Perfection
- Carefully transfer your assembled sandwich to the preheated air fryer basket.
- Cook at 180°C (360°F) for 5-6 minutes until golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is fully melted.
- Check at the 4-minute mark – if the top is browning too quickly but the cheese isn’t fully melted, reduce the temperature to 160°C (320°F) and cook for the remaining time.
Step 4: Serve
- Remove carefully from the air fryer basket (it will be hot!).
- Let it rest for about 30 seconds (this allows the melted cheese to set slightly so it doesn’t all ooze out when you cut it).
