Understanding Organic Milk Prices

At Modern Milkman, we believe in honest food, fair farming, and keeping our community informed. So if you’ve noticed the price of your organic milk going up recently, we want to explain why, simply, openly, and with care.

We understand that price increases affect all of us. And while no one enjoys paying more, there are real reasons behind the change, rooted in the environment, the economy, and the way organic farming works.

1. Organic Farming Costs More

Organic dairy farming prioritises animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and natural methods of production. This means:

  • Cows are given more space and pasture time.
  • Farmers avoid synthetic fertilisers and pesticides.
  • Feed is organic, and more expensive.
  • Antibiotics are used only when absolutely necessary.

These practices protect nature and support animal health, but they require more time, land, and labour. In 2024, the UK had 454 thousand hectares of fully organic land. This represents a decrease of 1.7% from 2023.

2. The Impact of Climate and Weather

Farmers are experiencing more frequent and severe weather challenges. From heavy rainfall to summer droughts, these shifts make it harder to grow feed, maintain healthy pastures, and keep up with seasonal rhythms. We’ve had the hottest spring for a good few years, and the predictability of this year’s weather will hit small organic farms the most.

3. Rising Costs Across the Supply Chain

Smaller, organic farms are definitely not immune to the impact of inflation. Everything from fuel, energy, packaging, and labour. The entire journey from farm to doorstep has become more expensive, and organic milk is no exception. Because organic producers already work within tighter margins, these changes have a significant impact.

While organic farming has clear benefits, the reality is that only 2.9% of UK cattle are reared organically, a figure that reflects the genuine difficulties farmers face in transitioning to organic methods, from higher costs to complex certification processes

4. Supporting Fair Pay for Farmers

We believe that farmers deserve a fair price for their work, especially those who commit to organic, ethical methods. When you buy organic milk, you’re helping ensure small, local farms can survive, grow, and continue farming in a way that’s better for the planet.

These aren’t just numbers. They’re livelihoods, communities, and families

What You Can Do?

We know price increases aren’t easy. We also know many of you choose organic because you care deeply about where your food comes from and how it’s made.

If you’re feeling the impact, here are a few ways to make the most of your milk:

  • Plan your orders carefully to reduce waste.
  • Use every drop, cook with it, or try batch recipes.
  • Reach out to us with questions, we’re here to help.

We’re incredibly grateful for your continued support and understanding. Every bottle of milk or Kefir you order helps support a food system that values people, animals, and the environment.

Together, we’re building something better.
