Wakefield Recycling rules are a lot like a cricket test match – confusing, frustrating, and they never seem to end. But we’re here to change that! We’ve laid out what you can and can’t recycle, as well as some general bin rules that may have been lost in translation. With this handy guide, you’ll be a recycling genius in no time.
Our main rule: Reuse when you can
As if our return and reuse fresh milk delivery wasn’t an example enough, our mission at Modern Milkman is to reduce waste entirely. For many of our products like our milkshake delivery or cereal refill, we make use of our reusable packaging. This doesn’t work for all of our products, of course, which is where Wakefield’s recycling rules will come in handy.
According to the council in Wakefield‘s recycling rules:
Here’s what you CAN put into your recycling bins:

Brown bin:
- • Plastics – only bottle shaped plastics and their lids should be put in your brown recycling bin. This includes pop bottles, detergent bottles, washing up liquid bottles. All other plastics belong in the green bin. Always empty, wash, squash and lids off!
- • Steel cans – those that hold soup, beans, dog food and so on – remember to give them a quick rinse
- • Aluminium cans
- • Paper and card – including paperback books, newspapers, magazines and envelopes
- • Glass bottles and jars – but not if they’re broken
- • Aerosol cans (that are empty) – for example deodorant bottles and air fresheners

Green bin:
- • Juice cartons
- • Plastic food trays – for example take-out trays, trays that cooked and uncooked meats come in
- • Yoghurt pots and ice cream cartons
- • Food waste
- • Pet food
- • Plastic bags
- • Plastic packaging
- • Nappies

Brown garden bin:
- • Flowers and plants
- • Bark, twigs and branches
- • Leaves
- • Hedge trimmings and prunings
- • Grass cuttings
- • Weeds
Here’s what CANNOT go into your recycling bins:
Brown bin:
- Anything plastic that isn’t a bottle or a lid – all food packaging, carrier bags, soup or yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, fruit or vegetable punnets
- Windowpane glass, drinking glasses and Pyrex dishes
- Shredded/ waxed/ greaseproof paper
- Card with food on it, for example, pizza boxes
- Juice and smoothie cartons
- Wrapping paper or cards with foil on
Brown garden bin:
- Food, fruit or vegetables
- Soil, turf or compost
- Pet waste and cat litter
- Bones and eggshells
- Vacuum contents and hair
- Planks of wood or large branches
- Extra rubbish or recycling
More Wakefield recycling notes:
Please make sure you rinse your bottles and jars and remove their lids before popping them into the bin. This ensures they can be recycled, and aren’t contaminated with anything else.
Need more room in your bin? Squash your cardboard boxes as it’ll give you more space! Not to mention, it’s a great stress reliever. Wakefield recycling rules ask that you don’t put any shredded paper into your recycling bin. If your brown recycling bin gets full, you can use plastic bags to leave additional brown bin waste at the side of the bin. Do not put plastic bags inside your bin.
Before you pop any foil into the bin, make sure it’s scrunched up and about the size of your fist.
Make sure you accurately dispose of items in your green bin. This ensures your garden waste is recycled and reused. Your garden waste is collected from March to November.

Where does it all go?
Your aluminium cans are recycled back into new ones. Did you know, it only takes eight weeks for them to be back on the shelves as new cans? So think back eight weeks ago, you could be drinking from the same can as then!
Your glass is recycled into new bottles and jars, road surfacing, and sand for golf bunkers. Fancy a few rounds?
Your plastic bottles are recycled into items such as fleece coats, bin liners, water butt, and compost bins.
Your plastic pots, tubs, trays, bags, and pizza boxes are sent to be used as fuel to Ferrybridge.
The food waste is treated, which then produces methane gas. This gas is then converted into electricity which your recycling centre uses on site.
Your garden waste is turned into compost which is then used in agriculture to grow your fruits and veggies.
