Annabel’s Deliciously British Strawberries

Welcome to Annabel’s Strawberry Farm. Dan and Moresha went on a trip to spend some time amongst the strawberries.

Annabel started growing strawberries with her dad while she was still at university, on the family farm at Sturton Grange in Yorkshire. She’s the fifth generation of her family to farm that land, which means she’s had a fair bit of practice at getting a strawberry right.

The farm now grows from May right through to October, choosing varieties based on the weather and the time of year rather than what’s easiest to ship. The strawberries are watered from a lake on the farm itself, the electricity comes from solar panels, and any berries that don’t quite make the grade don’t go to waste. They get turned into Tame & Wild, a range of alcohol free fruit drinks Annabel set up using exactly the fruit that wouldn’t otherwise get used. Even the punnets are biodegradable, made using power generated from strawberry waste. The farm’s LEAF, BRC and Red Tractor accredited, which is the boring but important way of saying it’s properly run, not just nicely described.

It’s the kind of farm that’s been quietly supplying Michelin starred restaurants and the best food retailers in the country for years, mostly because Annabel’s never been in a rush to cut corners just to hit a date on a calendar.
