As a member of Generation Z, we confront a future shadowed by the looming climate crisis. The challenge before us is: how can we work towards a solution and who is going to take that leap?
Why don’t people care about our future?
Growing up in a world where people enjoy sweltering heatwaves in February and grumble about the plastic bag charge, it’s clear that the idea of sustainability being a sacrifice is deeply embedded in society. We hear stories of severe storms, raging wildfires, increasing droughts, loss of species, and dwindling biodiversity, which can lead to a sense of feeling that there is nothing we can do. ‘The world is doomed’ is a phrase I, as a member of Gen Z, am all too familiar with.
Despite Gen Z being the most statistically climate-conscious generation, there’s still a prevalent feeling that solving the climate crisis is primarily the responsibility of corporations and higher powers. Many of my peers won’t go out of their way to recycle or cut down on single-use plastics, contributing to the challenges that will worsen as we grow older. I have noticed that within my generation there is a large disconnect between awareness and action despite the uncertainties of our future.
Despite this, we are very lucky!
We are fortunate to be a generation that is shaped profoundly by digital connectivity, where the urgency of the climate crisis resonates more widely than ever. From all corners of the earth, we witness firsthand the immediate effects of climate change. Social media empowers us to start crucial conversations and create platforms for ourselves to express our concerns about the uncertain future that is waiting for us.
Among these influential voices stands Greta Thunberg, widely recognised as ‘the voice of our generation’ in climate activism. Since she first captured global attention by sitting before the Swedish parliament in 2018, highlighting neglected climate issues, Greta has amassed a vast following on social media. She has emerged as a powerful advocate for climate change activism, wielding significant influence over policymaking, societal behaviours, and public discourse on climate change with her mission has been not just to lead a movement, but to unify young people in becoming proactive agents for change. She is a beacon of inspiration and leadership in our generation that we all admire!
Now, how do I feel The Modern Milkman’s mission reflect us as Gen Z?
The Modern Milkman’s mission resonates deeply with me and my peers, aligning closely with our concerns about the future we are inheriting. Their commitment to reducing single-use plastic packaging, promoting eco-friendly practices, and raising awareness about environmental issues emphasises that sustainability isn’t just a sacrifice; it’s an opportunity for each of us to actively contribute to creating a greener and more prosperous planet.
Despite the daunting challenges posed by the climate crisis, Modern Milkman and their suppliers are making tangible strides towards positive change. Their ongoing efforts provide optimism for our generation, showing that meaningful impact is possible for a better future purely from our own work.
