So, how did they achieve this level of egg-cellence? Read on to learn their story…
Meet the founders!
Geldard Eggs is a long-established family business, run by the Geldard family. John, Rachel, and their sons Richard and Charles, along with their wives Helen and Clare and their children, are all actively involved in the farming business, pioneering free-range egg production.
Where it all began…
The Geldard family has a long and storied history in the region, with their farming roots stretching back to Low Plumgarths near Kendal. This was where their journey began, but the construction of a roundabout in the 1960s unfortunately split their land, forcing them to seek new pastures. This turn of events led John and Rachel Geldard to High Wray Farm, a place steeped in history as it once belonged to William Heelis, the husband of the beloved author and conservationist Beatrix Potter. Here, they laid the foundations of their farming career, building on the legacy of the land.
After fifteen years at High Wray, the Geldards embarked on the next chapter of their story, relocating to Low Foulshaw Farm. This move marked a turning point for the family, as Low Foulshaw would become their permanent home and the base of their growing agricultural enterprise.
Starting from scratch, the Geldards built Low Foulshaw Farm into a flourishing mixed farming operation. Over the years, they have expanded their efforts to include 1,000 breeding sheep, a herd of 150 beef breeding cows, and multiple laying hen flocks, all spread across 530 acres of land. This hard work and dedication have not only established a successful farm but also solidified their reputation as top-quality egg producers through Geldard Eggs.
Their commitment to excellence in farming, combined with their deep respect for the land and its history, has made the Geldard family a trusted name in the region. Today, they continue to thrive at Low Foulshaw Farm, where their legacy of quality and sustainability carries on.
How are they committed to sustainability?
Over the many years of farming, the Geldard family has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to sustainability, ensuring that their farming practices not only support their livelihood but also protect and enhance the environment for future generations.
At the heart of their approach is a deep respect for the land they work on. The Geldards have implemented a range of environmental initiatives that reflect their dedication to preserving the natural landscape. They have invested in extensive tree planting, wildlife corridors and hedgerow restoration projects, which not only improve biodiversity but also help combat soil erosion and provide habitats for local wildlife.
In addition to these conservation efforts, the Geldards have embraced renewable energy solutions, incorporating solar power into their operations. This shift reduces their carbon footprint and aligns with their broader goal of running a farm that harmonises with nature rather than depleting it. Their holistic approach to sustainability, blending traditional farming methods with modern environmental practices, exemplifies their forward-thinking mindset and their commitment to leaving the land in better condition than they found it.
Through these efforts, the Geldard family not only cultivates high-quality produce but also nurtures the environment, ensuring that their farm remains a thriving, vibrant ecosystem for years to come. Pretty awesome hey?!
They’re are award winning too!
Over the years, Geldard Eggs has garnered several great awards. These accolades include the National Award for Local Food Farmer, which recognises dedication to sustainable, high-quality food production, and Excellence in Practical Farming, showcasing innovative practices.
